(And When You Actually Need To)

Whether you’re new to the cards or a seasoned reader, there comes a moment when your deck feels… off. Maybe the readings feel foggy. Maybe you’re picking up energy that isn’t yours. Or maybe it just feels a little heavy in your hands.
That’s your cue: it’s time to cleanse.
But cleansing doesn’t have to be ceremonial or complicated. It’s about resetting your deck so it’s clear, attuned, and ready to work with you again.
Here’s how to do it — and how to know when it’s needed.
Why Cleanse a Deck?
Every time you use your cards, they interact with energy: yours, your client’s, the space you’re in. Over time, that energy can linger.
Cleansing isn’t about removing “bad” vibes. It’s about clearing static, neutralizing old impressions, and creating a fresh channel for intuitive clarity.
You might want to cleanse your deck:
After reading for others
After a particularly emotional session
When you first get a new deck
During moon phases, seasonal shifts, or life transitions
Anytime the cards just feel off or unclear
Simple Ways to Cleanse Your Deck
1. Smoke
Waft gentle smoke over your deck using herbs like sage, cedar, mugwort, or palo santo (ethically sourced). Smoke is an ancient purifier and can clear away energetic residue with ease.
2. Moonlight
Leave your deck under the light of the full moon overnight — on a windowsill is just fine. The moon’s energy is clarifying and can reset the subtle field of your cards.
3. Crystals
Place a cleansing stone like selenite, clear quartz, or black tourmaline on or near your deck. Crystals work well for passive, ongoing energetic maintenance.
4. Salt or Earth
Wrap your deck in cloth and bury it in a bowl of salt (or even in the ground) for a few hours or overnight. This can be powerful, especially if your deck feels particularly heavy or energetically charged.
5. Knocking or Tapping
A quick way to clear surface energy: simply knock on your deck three times, or tap it lightly on a table. This acts like a reset button, especially when you’re short on time.
6. Visualization
Hold your deck in both hands, close your eyes, and visualize light flooding the cards... clearing, brightening, re-aligning. This is simple, subtle, and surprisingly effective.
Bonus: Intention Matters Most
You don’t need fancy tools. The most important element in any cleansing ritual is your intention.
Whether you're using moonlight or a moment of breath, what you’re really doing is declaring: This deck is clear. This space is sacred. I’m ready to listen again.
